Marcy McGinnis was named associate dean at Stony Brook University’s School of Journalism on September 1, 2007. As associate dean, McGinnis oversees development of the video curriculum, recruitment of faculty, fundraising, student recruitment, strategic planning, and development of satellite campuses for the journalism program. She also continues as director of the broadcast journalism program, a position she’s held since joining the journalism school in September 2006.
McGinnis joined the journalism faculty after a career at CBS News that spanned more than three decades. She was Senior Vice President, News Coverage, CBS News from June 2001 through December 2005 and Vice President, News Coverage from 1997-2001. She managed all CBS News’ worldwide newsgathering, hard news coverage, breaking news, all hard-news broadcasts, and the operation and staffing of all domestic and overseas bureaus. In that capacity, McGinnis was at the helm of the newsgathering operation during coverage of 9/11 and was one of the primary architects of CBS News’ award-winning coverage of the war in Iraq.
Prior to her appointment as Vice President, News Coverage, McGinnis was Vice President, Europe, and London Bureau Chief (1995-97), running the day-to-day newsgathering of the CBS News London bureau and the division’s news coverage in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. She won three Emmy Awards for coverage of the death of Princess Diana in 1997. She was Deputy London Bureau Chief, and Director, Newspath Europe from 1992-1995. While in Europe she formed and managed CBS News’ newsgathering consortium of international news broadcasters.
Before she was assigned to London, McGinnis was executive producer of CBS NEWSPATH (1989-92) and senior producer (1985-89). CBS NEWSPATH is the world’s largest satellite newsgathering system. She also created and managed the startup of the broadcast Up to the Minute.
McGinnis began her career in the CBS News Special Events unit where she held a variety of positions including producer (1982-85), associate producer (l976 82), assistant producer (1973-76), and administrative assistant (1970-73).
McGinnis is a native of Allenhurst, N.J. She graduated with honors from Marymount University in Arlington, Va. and from SUNY at Empire State. McGinnis holds honorary doctorate degrees from Marymount University and from Hofstra University’s School of Communication. She is on the boards of the International Center for Journalists (ICJF), Louisiana State University’s Manship School of Mass Communications, and Women’s eNews. She is on the advisory boards of Stony Brook University’s Center for News Literacy and the International Women in Media Foundation (IWMF).
